The Salem Witch trials brought anarchy that clouded the judgment of many prestigious judges, taking the lives of many innocent people. In The Crucible, John Proctor is a greatly respected man with secrets that could ruin his reputation. John Proctor's affair with Abigail Adams caused Abigail to accuse Elizabeth Proctor of witchery, although John is not responsible for Abigail's lies. John Proctor is not guilty, which makes him the true protagonist in The Crucible.
John Proctor's affair with Abigail Adams is clearly over when he tells her, "Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I"ll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind."(The Crucible) He realizes his mistake and tries to make her know that their relations are terminal. This brings severe rage upon Abby and she lies to get what she wants. Though Proctor may be the cause of Abigail's anger, he is not in control of her actions; thus Proctor is not responsible. John Proctor is responsible for himself and proves the responsibility for his actions by confessing to his wife, Elizabeth. His honesty wins the heart of his wife once again, speaking little of his mistake to the public. John Proctor keeps his good reputation in their society and moves on from this past. These actions express John Proctor's protagonist character in The Crucible. .
"A man may think God sleeps, but God sees everything, I know it now. I beg you sir, I beg you- see her what she is She thinks to dance with me on my wife's grave! And well she might, for I thought of her softly. God help me, I lust, and there is a promise in such sweet. But it is a vengeance- (The Crucible) Proctor confesses to having relations to Abigail Adams, in court, to save the lives of others. His confession is noble, and Proctor is heroic to risk his respected name to prove Abigail is a fraud. The confession given by John proves that he is a true protagonist, putting his wife's love in jeopardy.
