The Cider House Rules

The Cider House Rules is a memorable story about how far we must travel to find a place where we belong. Novel and screenplay writer John Irving with the collaboration of Lasse Hallstrom as the films director, made the novel and film an instant classic. Although the film won two academy awards for best supporting actor by Michael Caine and best adapted screenplay, the novel was a better rendition then the film due to its descriptive nature.
The most important parts and characters were taken and squeezed into a smaller period of time for the film, but in doing this many plot lines and characters were lost as well. This caused many differences between the novel and movie. .
One major effect that the changes made was that the personality of the characters seemed different. The personality of the protagonist which is Homer Wells seemed different because in the film there was very little background information given on him. The viewer is left wondering why homer is the way he is. .
Homer and Candy's son Angel was completely cut from the movie. In doing this it changes the character of Candy and also adds more change to Homer. In the novel Angel was the secret son of Candy and Homer which was conceived while Wally was away at war. Wally eventually finds out about the affair after all four of them had been living under the same roof for fifteen years. In the film when Wally comes back home from the war Candy and Homer end their relationship and Homer leaves for St. Clouds. The film made Candy seem cold and selfish, while in the novel motherhood made her seem more compassionate even though Angel had no idea she was his mother until closer to the end of the novel. This also made Homer seem like a very lonely and unloved person in the end. .
One other significant change was Dr. Larch's character in the film. In the novel Dr. Larch was a very weird and mysterious man, which was haunted by the memories of a prostitute that inspired him to perform abortions.
