Realism for the first hearing is a simple and an easily definable word. On the one hand it is true, but on the other hand it is so complex and it has various deep meanings. As one can see in literature realism is usually used for works that explain the reality of the external world and the people of that world. The true representation of the world -both the inner and the outer parts- is the main aim of this theory. Writers who lived in the medieval age not only represent the features of life but they imitated the realistic style.
In the first half of the twentieth century the great Chaucerian critics were absolutely under the effect of the contemporary climate which saw realism as a "vivid slice of life". They usually wanted to see the details themselves in the Chaucerian narrative rather than how they were used. Realistic writers were far more accepted at the turning of the nineteenth and the twentieth century than the ones who wrote various symbolic and fantastic fictions. People say that fictive works are based on untrue stories so they are only a "waste of time". .
There is no doubt about the fact that Chaucer was a realistic writer especially if we talk about his most well - known work the Canterbury Tales, but if we want to make a discussion about it we have to be really talented about the term.
Realism is the central point of literature and art. As it had been said in ancient times art has to be real. If we think about it a bit we can figure out that reality of art is a tricky question to discuss. On the one hand it is true that they have to be real to engage the attention of human beings but on the other hand it is obviously not true.
Narrative works have many devices to create the air of truth. We call this type of realism: "authenticating realism" and somehow it can be found in almost all narratives. Writers give us special points (time, places etc.) to make us believe that their tail is true.
