Simon Bolivar


Because of his constant participation in conspiratorial meetings, in April 19, 1810 Bolivar was officially forced out of Venezuela. The revolutionary tried to gain England's support for the independence but all his efforts were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, in Venezuela, a constitution was developed in 1801 by a national congress that after careful thought determined to declare the country's independence on July 5, 1812. Bolivar, who sought refuge in Colombia returned to Caracas where he was assigned to defend Puerto Cabello, one of Venezuela's most important ports. During this period the battles continued and on July 1812 the two countries signed an armistice that left Venezuela once more under Spanish control. Bolivar returned to Colombia where the first of his political statements urging for independence in Venezuela titled El Manifiesto de Cartagena was publicized. With this, Simon Bolivar emerged as the ultimate leader of the liberation of the young republics in Latin America. .
             On August 6, 1813 Bolivar entered Caracas after fighting several battles with the Spaniards that allowed him to gain control of the capital. He established a dictatorship and proclaimed himself liberator of the country. But his government didn't last long since in 1814 the Spanish army once again defeated him. Bolivar escaped to Jamaica. It was here where while in exile, he wrote his most important document, La Carta de Jamaica. In it, he presented his idea of developing constitutional republics in South America shaped on England's system where the president was chosen for life and composed of two houses: one that was hereditary and the other chosen by elections. He also denounced the abuses made by Spain to the colonies, the reasons for why the liberal forces were unsuccessful and the sacrifices demanded by independence. .
             Due to the neutrality professed by England and North America Bolivar asked the aid of Haiti where they helped him raise and army and return to Venezuela in 1816.
