It is hard to define in a way that will please everyone. Honor can be defined as a good name, as an outward respect or symbol, and as a person of superior rank. Honor may have many different meanings or, to some no meaning at all. Honor is a word that has specific definitions in dictionaries, but it does not always match what we believe. Many people perceive honor in their own way. .
Honor is the ultimate sign of respect, a highly distinguished position. Honor cannot be labeled to just anyone, but it must be earned. Honor is received through good character, honesty, and reliability. Honor is something that is felt or entertained in the mind.
Many people who are considered to be honorable are people in the military who have served our country. It is honorable that people risk their lives for the sake of others that they have never met. "The stains of honor," it is said, "could only be cleansed with blood." Famous people are often honored by gestures like a red carpet being laid out to walk on. Salutes are given to those of high ranking in military fields to show honor. Labels that are added to their names honor others. The president is honored as Mr. President, and people of royalty as "your highness" or "sir." Not all people off high status earn the honor they are rewarded with. Celebrities just simply do their jobs, by acting or singing. Service men earn their right by sacrificing theirs lives for the people of our country. The president does not always deserve the respect that he receives. Some leaders, such as Nixon, spoiled the honor in the name of president. .
Gaining honor can occur on many different levels. To become honored in your hometown, win a big high school football game and many could easily honor you. After representing my high school in the 2002 Empire State Games and bring home a gold medal, I was shown honor and praise my coaches, teachers and even fellow teammates. If you contribute to your country in a time of crisis you will be honored on a much higher level.
