Global Warming: Its effect on our atmosphere

Each greenhouse gas differs in its ability to absorb heat in the atmosphere, but they all make it so that it becomes harder for the radiation that the sun shines into the atmosphere to escape. The heat continues to build up and this is what causes the temperatures to increase. .
             The increased amount of carbon dioxide is leading to global warming of the Earth's surface because of its enhanced greenhouse effect. Carbon dioxide is the most important greenhouse gases which are increasing because of human activities. The increase in carbon dioxide has "contributed to about 70% of the enhanced greenhouse effect" (qtd. in Houghton: 22). The next most important greenhouse gases are methane, nitrous oxide, and CFC's. Carbon dioxide is currently increasing and its primary reason is its increase in the use of fossil fuels. .
             Since the last 19th century, "temperatures have increases 0.5-1.0 degrees in Fahrenheit" (qtd. in Reid: 131). In the last fifteen years, we have had the ten warmest years in record. Of these, 1998 was the warmest year on record. See diagram 2. Some argue that global warming and the greenhouse effect actually helps the environment because the Earth's temperature would be a lot lower than the 60 degree average. Unfortunately for those who think global warming helps the environment that is the only fact that they have to argue against. Due to the harmful greenhouse gases being placed in the atmosphere, instead of the temperature staying at a constant it is slowly rising.
             There are many global impacts that affect the Earth due to global warming. Firstly, it causes many glaciers and polar ice caps to melt because of the increase in temperature. This in turn causes the sea level to rise around the world. In the last century alone, "the seas have risen from about four to ten inches" (qtd. in Reid: 149). It may not sound like a massive impact or change, but it eventually causes a big problem around the world.
