Effects of a Tragedy

Although Frank wrote many pieces Sullivan noted, "Frank is probably best known as the author of Alas, Babylon" (Porter Database). .
At the height of Frank's career during the 1940's and 50's there was an uneasy feeling among many Americans. This feeling came about when nations began developing military equipment which involved the use of atomic energy. These new and more powerful weapons were capable of mass destruction of anything they came across. The most common fear associated with construction of nuclear weapons was the fear of an accidental explosion or another country bombing. Another thing adding to the fear of Americans was the BRAVO test in 1954 that contaminated 7,000 square miles of land and sea which included islands, people, and fish brought in by fisherman of that area. Although nuclear war was a common thought in most people's heads almost none of the writer's of that time tackled the issue. That is until Pat Frank; he is one of the most famous writer's of science fiction novels that involved the issue of nuclear war. He wrote both fiction and non-fiction novels that focused on all different aspects of war and the problems associated with it. One of his novels Mr. Adam is a novel about the after effects of a nuclear explosion in a bomb factory in Mississippi. Another one of Frank's novel's associated with war is Forbidden Area. This novel concentrates on some reason's why the United States should fear an attack from Russia. The novel describes details and names each of the United States flaws and why a much feared attack would result in a loss for the U.S. .
Alas Babylon is typical example of a survivalist's viewpoint of a past nuclear war. The novel opens with Randy Bragg getting the news of a possible dooms day that may occur in the near future. Throughout the novel Frank focuses on one particular group of people who live in the small town of Fort Repose, Florida.
