The Life of basketball


The court consists of two baskets, one on each end of the floor. The baskets are ten feet high. Both teams come to the middle of the court to jump for possession of the ball. Jumping for possession means that the tallest player from each team jumps to get the ball when the referee throws the ball into the air. A referee is a person who keeps the game fair and to make sure the rules are followed to the "T". This general idea of basketball exists in all levels of basketball starting from high school and ending in the NBA. .
             The NBA or the WNBA is the highest level at which a person can achieve basketball greatness. Not all men make to the NBA. Only one out of one million make it to the NBA. The WNBA is a Basketball league for women that got its start in 1998. .
             There is other basketball leagues such as the CBA, which is a league for guys to develop their talent and hopefully to be picked up by the NBA. Europe also has a basketball league. Players from the NBA may go to Europe to play if they could not make in the NBA. In order for you to be selected into the NBA you have to enter you name into the draft selection. Ninety-nine percent of NBA players are drafted from colleges and universities. The other one- percent comes from high school. The most recent basketball players to come from high school are Kobe Bryant who plays for the Lakers and Kevin Garnett who play for the Minnesota Timberwolves. .
             Understanding the basics and the draft process is not enough for my thirst of knowledge in the game of basketball. I wanted to find out where the idea of basketball evolved from? And how basketball grew into such a large sport branching of into college and national recognition.
             In coming with an idea to start I interviewed a hand full of people who played high school basketball and a player from the IUP basketball team. The question that I asked was who invented basketball and where did the idea stem from? Kevin Willis said" Basketball was invented at the YMCA and they used peach baskets to shoot the ball into".
