The Sopranos is a hit television show on the HBO network. Every Sunday night, people from all over the country tune in to watch the show. Having never seen the show, one might wonder what makes the series such a success. Many people might enjoy watching the thrilling of life modern day people in the Mafia, and some families might relate it to their Italian culture. Either way The Sopranos has many aspects that all kinds of different people can enjoy.
After looking at some websites, I have found a number of fan sites for the show. The audience for the show definitely seem to be loyal. For example, on one of the message boards, I found a clip from a girl who simply wanted to declare her love for the show. I know that my parents are, too, diehard fans as well as many of my friends here in Colorado. However, I cannot see the program being aimed toward younger children. It appears that the target audience is toward older, mature people that can understand the plot. .
The Sopranos definitely show themes such as loyalty and revenge. For example, in one episode Ralph killed Tony's racehorse. As a result, Tony then killed Ralph. That is a perfect example of revenge and how the characters oftentimes respond to things. In the same episode, however, is also a great instance of loyalty. After Tony killed Ralph, his nephew Chris was first to the scene to assist Tony in the disposal of Ralph's body. I think that it is also a stereotypical idea that Italians are extremely loyal when it comes to their families. I would assume these characters are also faithful in order to not lose their lives.
Having not seen the show, I can only assume that people love The Sopranos because it is a program about another world. It is a world in which the Mafia is a real and everyday experience. It portrays Italian families and shows how the Mafia effects each member of the family. The Sporanos is an intriguing TV show that is unlike any other.
