The overprescription of ritalin

These sometimes distorted, often subjective opinions make it unclear as to if the appropriate people are being diagnosed with ADHD. Without a true test that can clearly prove to us who has ADHD and who doesn't we are left guessing; leaving it up to the clinical decision making found in the diagnosis of unsure doctors. Since it is unclear as to how exactly we can diagnose the right people with the disorder it becomes obvious that we must currently be misdiagnosing a certain percentage of the people with ADHD. If we are miss diagnosing even one person with the condition then we are over diagnosing it. If we are over diagnosing the disorder itself then it can be said with certainty that we must be over prescribing the treatments for the disorder. .
The main treatment for Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is Methylphenidate, most commonly known as Ritalin. Even if we put aside all the arguments of the side effects and the morality of the drug, the simple fact would remain that if someone doesn't have the disorder in question to begin with they should not be receiving the treatment for it. That is proof enough right there that Ritalin is being over prescribed throughout America and world wide. More people are receiving Ritalin then they should be. Case closed. .
Many cases can even be made against the prescription of Ritalin to those who actually do have the disorder itself. A frequent attribute those suffering from ADHD have been linked with is anti-social behavior such as aggression, defiance and other conduct .
problems. Conduct problems and anti-social behavior is a well established predictor of early substance use and abuse. Substance Use Disorder is particularly associated with early usage. By constantly giving our already substance addiction susceptible children Ritalin at ages as early as 3 to deal with their disorder we are only setting them up for trouble with dependency later in life.
