The year this poem was written is 1865, right after Lincoln's assassination. Then the Captain must be related to President Lincoln. Also, on the ship, the Captain is the most respect and important person. Since the ship is the symbol for the nation, the President is the most respect and important person. The voyage was over and the Captain was death, so was the war and the Commander in Chief was death. Both the Captain and President Lincoln will never be able to enjoy the accomplishment they work so hard to accomplished. The newly-freed slaves might related themselves to the journey that just ended. To them the journey was so harsh that when it was all over, it felt like being on land after being at sea for so long at sea. But most people is grieving because they just lost the most important person in their lives. Also, as seen in the title and throughout the poem, the letter "O" were used numerous time. In a sense, the "O" is not actually the letter O. It could, instead, be the number zero. Since zero is equal to nothing, or more important, non-existent. The usages of the zero means that everything it was describing no longer exist. .
Imagery plays an important role in understanding this poem. Whitman was using a lot of visual imageries to described the everything that was taken place. In the poem, the sailor was describing the surrounding to his death Captain. "O Captain! My Captain! Rise up and hear the bells;/ Rise up for you the flag is flung- for you the bugle trills;/ For you bouquets and ribbon's wreaths. For you the shores a - crowding,/ For you they call, the swaying, their eager face turning." In this verse, the sailor is trying to wake u hi Captain. He is doing this by describing everything that is going the pier. All of the activities on the pier is the result of the Captain's success. In reality, Whitman was trying to compare the poem to his situation. In a way, Whitman was trying to wake up Lincoln, so he can enjoy all of his accomplishments.
