Body Of Truth

Have you ever felt that what you are made to see as the truth might not always be the truth? At some point in our lives we will discover that we can't believe the surface of things we see because there are no absolute truths. The Pascal quote of David Lindsey's Body of Truth states, "we perceive an image of the truth and posses nothing but falsehood." This epigraph is the message of the book as a whole, and the text of the novel proves that what we are made to see as the truth might not always be the truth. .
Throughout the novel Dr.Grajeda is portrayed as a man who doesn't trust others and keeps to himself. These qualities make Grajeda an excellent element in the novel to demonstrate to us that we can't always believe everything we hear or see. When Haydon first questions Grajeda about Lena Muller he tells him he doesn't know who she is. Haydon views Grajeda to be straightforward and believes him. Later on in the novel Haydon agrees to meet Grajeda and has to take extreme caution not to be followed on his way to the shoe store. When Haydon arrives to the shoe store Grajeda says to him, "I don't think you were risking your life to come here to see us Mr.Haydon, but I can assure you that the rest of us have risked our lives to come here to see you" (256). Grajeda's comment shows us the predicament he is in. Grajeda is hiding a secret so big that people's lives are in jeopardy. In that same meeting Grajeda says to Haydon, " I apologize for lying to you yesterday morning. Surely you must understand I had to be careful" (256). Here we see that Grajeda previously lied to Haydon about knowing Lena, but he apologizes sincerely. As the reader you like Grajeda's character because he was straightforward and honest to Haydon about lying to him in the first place. It's ironic that Haydon along with the reader of the novel respects Grajeda even after he has lied. This proves that the image of the truth we perceive posses falsehood.
