Alpha behn

Many anti-slave groups ensured that Oroonoko remained in print throughout the 18th and the early 19th century. Due to this, it could be assumed that Alpha Behn is against slavery. While reading this piece of literature, I did get this impression. I think that I began to get this impression from the beginning, the description of Oroonoko. Behn described him more like a dark roman than an African. I thought this to be quite curious and a give on what the author's views were. The comparisons to a roman carry out through out this piece of literature, it could even been said that she portrayed him as a roman hero. He has many good virtues in this piece of literature, one of the most important of which is his honor. This is a trait that is not thought Africans have in many pieces of literature. This is why, in these pieces of literature, it is so easy to control these slaves. I believe that Behn is attempting to show that these slaves are not so different than the Europeans, though in skin pigmentation. Another trait that Oroonoko has that can also be thought of in this way is his education, though not a reading education, he seems to be quite knowledgeable. He even shows courage when being tortured to death, not screaming and not giving up easily. I think that Behn is showing these similarities to show that there is no large difference between the Europeans and the Africans and thus it is wrong to enslave them. I believe that this is the reason that so many anti-slavery groups made sure that Oroonoko remained in print as long as it did. .
