What, then, is this new man, the American? They are a mixture of English, Scotch, Irish, French, Dutch, Germans, and Swedes. From this promiscuous breed, that race, now called Americans, have arisen, (J. Hector St. Josh de Crevecouer). Millions of immigrants have been coming to American for hundreds of years. They have come to start a new life in peace. Just like in the 1900's, immigrants come to the United States seeking opportunity and fleeing bad situations.
Many people such as Shimpei Shimonyia had to deal with challenges in the United States. Shimpei was born in the beautiful town of Tokyo, Japan and currently lives in Arcadia, California. His journey from Japan was both long and hard. He had to take a seven hour plane trip to arrive to a new country. Leaving his family and friends was just one obstacle Shimpei has to overcome. He later found that he would be discriminated and made fun of. People would call him names and show him disrespect. Coming to America was not easy for him, he had to learn a whole new language and get used to new and authentic American cuisines. After a couple of years went by Shimpei began to master the English language. He also became friends with many Americans who would guide him in the right direction.
Immigrants in the past have had to deal with many problems such as poor living and working conditions and discrimination. When immigrants come to America, they arrived with very little money. They had to take poor paying and dangerous jobs. Immigrants always had to deal with the lowest quality products such as broken down apartment. They lived in apartments that ran for five cents a day. Along with a four person family, there were often five or six others who lived together. Most immigrants found their way to segregated towns, where they could live with a large number of people from their homeland. They did this because they were afraid of discrimination. Immigrants knew that they were not welcome and people who did not like them would try to hurt them.
