How successful have the post-communist states been in establishing a stable democracy?.

This essay will study the success rate of the establishment of a stable democracy in post-communist states. It will give a short introduction on democracy, what classifies as democracy, and the different paths taken to democracy, also stating the different problems that post-communist countries had to face when hey began the process of democratisation. In addition to this it will state the collapse of communism and why thee countries have chosen a democratic' government rather than an authoritarian government etc. This essay will compare and contrast two post-communist countries, focusing on Poland, who has had a fairly successful' transition to democracy, and Romania, who shows clear signs of a complicated and uncertain transition towards democracy. It will focus on government issues, such as the constitution, elections, executives and legislatures, enabling us to see the different levels of democratisation, each country has met. Furthermore it will discuss the important issue of the European Union, and show how, depending on the country, and its success of democracy it has been given the opportunity to join the European Union, which proves to be a very important indicator as to who has succeeded and who has not. In compliance with this thought, we will also look at freedom house, which gives an annual report on the levels of freedom' in each particular country, again proving essential to identify who is progressing and who is lagging or at a standstill. The conclusion will state the different success rates of the post-communist countries, and how each hopes to improve. It will also be able to prove that there are far more benefits from a smooth and fast and transition, rather then a country that seems slow and unwilling to move on to a more prosperous way of living.
