As the media tried to blame the murders on the music however in Eminem's song The Way I Am' he argues back by saying and they blame it on Marilyn and heroin. But where were the parents at and look where it's at. Middle America and now it's a tragedy in upper class ci-ty' (Eminem, 2000) The media uses the media as a form of scapegoat, instead of looking at the bigger social picture of the boys discourses and how they were raised to answer the question of why they acted in such a way; instead they blame a musician whose music is listen to by a huge number of people who haven't committed such crimes. Although Marilyn Manson's music is distasteful it isn't the food for cold-blooded murder. .
Aggressive music has always promoted violence in a direct way this easily noticed in 1970's punk music and even more so today in heavy metal. The live show is a good example of how music can directly influence its audience. A heavy metal band called At the Drive-In who are known of having the heaviest mosh pits. A mosh pit (also known as slam dancing') consists of violently dancing whist punch and pushing each other in time with the music. This has a direct effect on it's audience, the lead singer Cedric Bixler stated in an interview for The Guardian, You're going to feel the need to beat the shit out of each other. (Guardian, December 6,2000) Later in the same article Naylor states, (their music) is played with the sort of elemental, visceral energy that turns mosh pits into war zones. (Naylor, 2000) This is desensitising violence because it is not the norm of society to act in a violent way towards other people, it desensitises them for several reasons. Firstly, they expect violence at these shows and some fans even go there solely for the purpose to be violent towards each other. Secondly, these concerts are very popular and encourage violence from the start, this desensitises violence because it is nothing new to these arenas and therefore today's youth think nothing of hurting other fans or themselves.
