Impact of Globalization on Asian Immigrant Women Workers.
"When exported-oriented agriculture is encouraged, indeed coerced, peasant families are evicted from their lands to make room for corporate farms, and women become seasonal workers in the fields or in processing area." (Chang, p.132) Many Asian immigrant women are to finds jobs in the service industry, in manufacturing, or in home work, producing garments for export. (Class lecture, Nov. 18) To financially support their family, Asian immigrant women has to leave their family and migrate to search for a good job. Millions of women migrate each year in hoping to look for a better job. Some become servants, service workers, and sex workers in the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan, and the Middle East. "The demand for service workers, and especially for private household caregivers and domestic workers, is exploding in wealthy nations of the First World undergoing their own version of adjustment." (Chang, p.133) .
In the United States, Asian immigrant women do not benefit much in earning money and healthcare. They also get lack of subsidized childcare; contribute to an expanded demand among dual-career, middle-class households for workers in childcare, eldercare, and housekeeping. This gives Asian immigrant women the less opportunity to help their family and also having to work in low wage jobs. Migrating to the Unites States, immigrant women have to live a harsher life because they are restricted to all the assistance in the United States. "Their vulnerability is further reinforced by United States immigration policies, designed to migrant women as contract laborers or temporary workers who are ineligible for the protections and rights afforded to citizens." (Chang, p.133) Governments from both countries who send and receive the Asian immigrant women are paid by these immigrants.
