Hunter gatherer

Food storage in pits would suggest that a collector system was in place in the period 30,000 to 15,000 B.P. During the gravattian period archaeological evidence in 030123171.
Moravia points towards there being large numbers of imported raw materials (Svoboda 1997). At the site of Byu Skala 70.8% of material was imported while on 29.2% was local. This would suggest that there was a collector system where butchery occurred mainly at base sites, which would involve the transportation of meat back from the kill location. Also evidence found at Dolni Veslonice showed the stone tools were made of rare materials gathered over a vast area including Baltic moraines in Poland over 150km from the original site (Soffer 1989). Again this supports the collectors theory as they would cover larger distances than foragers.
Binford (1980) adds to this view by using the idea that collectors had two types of site, residential base and location. The location sites would have been much more basic but it would have allowed collectors to cover larger distances as they could use these simpler sites as a temporary base for shelter while hunting. Residential bases would be much more advanced and would be the site where most of the group would live.
A possible contradiction to this idea of collectors travelling large distances in search of food comes from the theory of a Garden of Eden settlement where everything that was required for living and eating was at one site (Bender 1978). However in reality this would be very difficult to achieve due to landscape and climatic problems but there is some evidence at the site of Dolni Veslonice that might suggest this. Large deposits of mammoth bones were found in low-lying areas seperate from the main settlement (Klima 1969a). It was suggested by Absolon (1945) that these accumulations were due to human activity or natural deaths either of which would seem to be unlikely but the question still remains, how and why did they come to be there.
