The Rookie

His players see him pitch on a daily basis and they believe he is excellent pitcher and still has a shot to play in the majors. Jim begins to interpret the kids" reaction to his pitching. This reaction leads Jim to feel that he has a chance to make a major league team and from this feeling Jim forms a new self image. In the self image that Jim develops, he is a tremendous pitcher and he begins to believe that he can play baseball at the professional level. Once he forms this self-concept, he makes the bet with his players, knowing that they are good enough to win the district championship, and that he would have to try out for a professional team.
At this point in the movie the concept of the looking glass-self can be seen working not only on Jim, but also on the team that he coaches. The team is in last place and can not win a game; however, Jim believes in them and gives them one hundred percent of his time. The players begin to realize that Jim has faith in them and that other people around town, whom have helped with the team, also believe that they can win. Once the players begin to realize that others have confidence in them, they form a new self-image about themselves. The image they form no longer has them as losers, but as a team that can win, which they quickly start doing and by the end of the season win the district championship.
After the high school team wins the district championship, Jim has to honor his bet and try out for a professional team. Jim is apprehensive as he sets off for the try outs with his son and baby daughter. He is the oldest player that shows up for the tryouts; and other players begin to question his intentions and abilities. The coaches recognize him, but think he has brought a young prospect. All there of these factors contributed to Jim's self image begins to lower and he starts to doubt his abilities; however, his incredible arm speed earns him a position on a minor league team.
