Global Warming in the Arcti

The temperature in the Arctic is already higher than the global average. Some additional variations that are anticipated are more rain and earth dampness in the winter and a decrease in the daily temperature range. The average annual temperature in the Arctic has increase by one degree Celsius. The rise in temperature has affected the Arctic ice as well as its climate. (Early Warning Signs, 1).
The Arctic ice is decreasing. The frost is coming later and the thaw in the Arctic is coming earlier than usual. Even the lakes and rivers are freezing later and unfreezing earlier. "Satellite monitoring since the 1970s has revealed a decline in the total area extent of Arctic Sea ice at a rate of about 3% per decade. A new analysis shows that the area of ice is declining more rapidly, by 7% per decade since 1978." (Early Warning Signs, 1) The ice thickness also seems to be decreasing. The thinning is thought to be amazing since it occurs across the bottom of all the ice. This decrease in the ice thickness is much greater than would normally be expected. (Early Warning Signs, 2).
Any atmospheric condition change that modifies when or where the ice freezes and thaws has important affects on the ecosystems in the Arctic. The Yupik, a native group of the Arctic, have already been affected by changes. They relate postponed formation of sea ice along with an early melt and a decreased length of their hunting season. They have also seen more rain, fog and cloudy skies during the spring and summer, when it is usually dry. (Early Warning Signs 2).
The melting of the ice in the Arctic is threatening the wildlife that lives there. The global warming could mean extinction for seabirds, walruses, and polar bears. The thinning ice in the Arctic is the home of most animals that live in the Arctic. The polar bears in the Arctic are the animals that are most affected by the changes in the Arctic ice. The polar bears rely on the ice in order to reach the seals on which they feed.
