PRO AND CONS OF STANDARD LIVING

Is it the responsibility of government to provide a minimum standard of living for all citizens?.
Most definitely "YES", there are people in the United States that rely on minimum wage or social services as their major source of income for their entire family. These people pay for food, shelter and clothing for themselves, a spouse if they have one and their children, while making only $5.15 an hour or less if the income is from social services.
A minimum standard of living needs to be established so that all citizens can feel secure that they have their basic needs met. The price of living continues to increase, inflation is always a concern, and our money always seems to buy less.
People who earn set yearly salaries receive cost of living increases that help them to face inflation when occurs. But those who earn only minimum wage do not have that luxury. They need the help governments" help.
Matthew Miller, a journalist, consultant and advisor in the Clinton administration argues that America's most crucial problems could be solved by spending just 2 percent more than the government does now.
The breakdown is this: $80 billion a year to finance health care for those who can't afford it, $30 billion to make teaching in poor schools an attractive career choice, $85 billion to establish a living wage of about $9 per hour; $2 billion for school vouchers so that parents can still have a choice of where their children are educated, $3 billion annually to create the campaign financial system, and $500 million for administrative expenses. Mr. Miller then says that $10 billion should be spent to make preschool universal and $10 billion to repair deteriorated schools. That all adds up to $220 billion, or 2 percent of the gross domestic product of roughly $11 trillion for 2004.".
Mr. Miller believes that "for 2 cents on the national dollar, we would have a country where everyone has basic health coverage, every full-time worker earns at least $9 per hour; and poor children have great teachers in fixed-up schools.
