Jane Addams was a women who focused her attention on people and wanted to help in .
One idea that was mentioned in the readings that struck my interest was .
that immigrant children were getting in trouble for stealing. In class we discussed two different .
methods of teaching immigrant children how to abide by the laws of America, 1) harsher laws .
and punishment, and 2) more education at school and home. In my paper I will talk about how .
we need to educate these children in order for them to abide by the laws that we have set forth.
In order to educate them we have to have a basis that we will teach. We need to teach .
history, and along with history comes customs, which will then ultimately be followed by the .
laws of society. History is a very important part our culture. In order to understand why .
certian laws exist we have to know where they came from and why, and that is where history .
comes in. Many of the immigrant children of the time didn't know anything about American .
ways of life, mostly because thier parents didn't know much. And some children knew little, but .
still much more than thier parents. Customs are the rules and norms which we abide by in .
society. They are less formal than the written laws, but still very important in society, and many .
customs have gone on to become written laws. Finally, if we are to teach history, that will lead .
to customs which will then lead to the laws of our country. .
Many of these children need to be "Americanized" in order to be able to survive. There .
are different ways of doing things in different places. By inforcing harsher laws, and "showing .
and example" to children we need to embed these ideas into thier heads so that they become .
second nature to them. If we do that then we have made a foundation for children to learn how to survive in the United States of America.
