They are often activities exercised by the same people as part of their formal positions of power in an organization. However, they should be seen as separate activities. Good leadership, unfortunately, is often bogged down by concern over the managerial aspects of a job.
What makes individuals good leaders: This is the $64,000 question. Are leaders born or made? Do people have specific personality traits that make them good leaders? The book notes that a great deal of research was conducted prior to the 1950's that failed to find any distinct traits about leaders, other than the fact that they are slightly taller and more intelligent than their followers. (An interesting point to note in Old Testament writings is that leaders were selected on the basis of height. It was seen as an indication of divine ordination.) However current research suggests that personality may actually affect leadership potential. The text focuses on the trait model of leadership (the Great Person Theory), but notes the importance of leadership behaviours.
The Great Person Theory: Also known in older texts as the Great Man Theory. This theory is based on the notion that great leaders have an aura about them that sets them apart from their followers. This aura has several dimensions:.
             1) Leadership motivation: Great leaders appear to be motivated to lead. They may simply want the power that goes along with leadership (personalized power motivation) or they may be motivated to achieve some organizational goal (socialized power motivation). .
             2) Cognitive ability: Great leaders are typically intelligent and able to process large amounts of information. They are not, however, typically geniuses.
             3) Flexibility: The ability to adapt to a wide range of circumstances and situations.
             4) Drive: Desire to achieve.
             5) Honesty and integrity.
             6) Self confidence.
             7) Knowledge of the business.
             8) Creativity.
