The movie Fail Safe starts off in Omaha, Nebraska with a tour of an Air command's control facility to Congressman Raskob and the tour is being giving by General Bogan. An alert is giving during the tour when SAC bombers are flying at their safe points and this was only thought to be a minor problem, but this called all planes to bomb the Soviet Union. The president seems to successfully call all the plans back to base, but group six is still headed towards the Soviet Union, they were unable to pick up the calls. .
The rest of the plans are sent out to stop group six and even shoot them down before reaching the Soviet Union. The plans never get near group six due to lack of fuel and fall into the Artic Ocean. After this happens the president and the Omaha base try and help the Russians destroy the group of planes. .
The thesis of the movie is that a war could of still broke out even though everyone thought that the cold war was over and the relations were good. There was warnings that were pretty positive that we were under attack by the Soviets. All of this happened due to electrical malfunctions that almost caused big problems between the United States and the Soviets. The movie really makes you stop and think on what could of really happened if this stuff was not picked up on and he really scares you about our defense system and why couldn't this happen again. The movie is organized chronologically and goes by the years that all of the events in the movie happened. From the years following the cold war to the scared years following the cold war.
This movie can be described as political history and social history. Political history because this had a lot to do with the president and his decisions and relations with the Soviet Union. He had to make important decisions on what he thought would be in the best interest of the country. This had to do with social history because this was very scary times for the American people.
