The Spanish Empire

2. They were supposed to introduce Spanish culture to them as well. This probably sounded good to help them justify what they were doing but it is not what actually happened. According to one source, "The Spanish ruthlessly massacred native populations and freely enslaved them in some of the most cruel slave practices ever seen on the face of the earth. The average Native American slave lasted barely a year under his or her Spanish masters." (The Spanish Empire).
If you were a Peninsulare or a Criolle you could be part of an encomienda system. This meant that you could be granted as many as 100 Indians to come and work for you. You were supposed to educate them, protect them, and Christianize them. This too sounded good in theory but was not generally the case at all. It appears that for the most part Indians were turned into slaves with no education, protection or Christianization. It was a way for them to justify enslaving a whole race of people. This is another sign of how greedy these people were. The entire system failed due to a dramatic decline in the Indian population mainly from disease. They later changed over to a different system called the "debt peonage" system. This system was supposed to pay Indians for their work. It sounded promising but turned out to be just the opposite. The Spanish might for example pay the Indians 25 pesos a day for working. They would then turn around and charge them 30 pesos a day for rent. Under Spanish law you had to do labor for a man as long as you were in debt to him. This was a way for the Spaniards to basically enslave the Indians. If it was not high rent then they would make anything they could to ensure that the Indians were in debt to them. This way they could always have labor and have control of them. It seems that whatever policy or law was put in place by the Spanish government, the people found ways around them in order to further their own wealth.
