Wife of Bath

It is late at night and I am ready for bed, but I thought I would write you a short letter to let you know how the pilgrimage is going. Incase you forgot; I am on my way to the sacred shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury. I am traveling in a group of approximately thirty people and as you know there is safety in numbers. There are many different classes of people on this journey ranging from a nun to a pardoner. This should make for an interesting pilgrimage. I look forward to socializing.
Already, the journey has become entertaining. A man by the name of Chaucer, I believe, can take credit for that. He proposed that everyone on the pilgrimage should tell four tales, two on the way there and two on the way back. This pilgrimage is becoming much more suited for me, seeing as the stories are taking away from the religious aspect of the journey. It is also making the traveling go by much quicker. As you probably suspected, I did not come on this pilgrimage solely for the cause of worship. As ironic as it may seem, I don't think the nun came on this pilgrimage purely for worshiping either.
When it was the nun's turn to tell a tale, I wasn't paying any attention. I expected that her tale would be the same old thing about miracles, Jesus, or the Virgin Mary. For the first half of the nun's story I could only concentrate on looking at the knight. He seemed to be looking over in my direction and you know that I would not want to miss out on any opportunities. Seeing that I am getting older and I have been married several times, I"m just not the budding rose I used to be. Anyways, the nun's story caught my attention when I heard her say something about a little Catholic boy getting his throat slit and then dumped into a pool of excrement. This was a story I could pay attention to. When the nun finished her shallow and hypocritical story, I was quite shocked. What is a nun doing telling a gruesome tale about murder? This nun does not seem like a very righteous woman considering all of the vows she has broken.
