Napster was the easiest way to get the music people wanted. I personally used Napster from the day I learned of it until the day it was shut down. Napster changed the way me and my friends looked at music. Nearly everyday we came to school telling each other what we downloaded and liked the night before. We never considered if it was right or wrong. We never examined the fact that the artists weren"t receiving any profits off of our downloading and recording compact discs. Although I understand the situation now, I still download music now through other sources.
After Napster was shut down, the search for a Napster clone was on. Kazaa, WinMX, Audiogalaxy are currently the leaders in Napster clones. Kazaa and WinMX offer audio and video files as well as pictures, while Audiogalaxy only offers music files. I have used WinMX and still currently use Kazaa occasionally. Another effective way, available only to America Online subscribers, to download music is to go into America Online private chat rooms. In these rooms, there are servers who have lists of thousands of audio and video files, software, and video games. These files include music CD's that have not even been released to stores yet and movies that have recently been opened in theaters. With over 40% of Web users subscribed to America Online, this should be a major concern for the music, movie, software, and video game industries. Although it is not just the music industry being affected by internet piracy, the music industry is affected much more than any other.
