Unbalanced Society

Society will become unbalanced and corrupt when there isn't an even amount of intellect, emotion, soul and evil in every person. This can be seen in the novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding. This is shown in many ways. Piggy had a lot of intellect, Simon showed lots of soul, Jack had strong emotion and Roger represented evil. Ralph tried to combine all four ways and be a balanced person to make society work on the island. In an isolated society, such as the one the boys were in, if there is a lack of balance of intellect, emotion, soul and evil then people will become corrupt and society will break down. .
Firstly, Jack and Roger were pretty close friends, and both had either an excess of emotion or evil. Right from the beginning Jack showed a lot of emotion. Jack shows he had a natural instinct to show emotion when he volunteers himself and his choir group to be in charge of hunting. Jack had an instinct to want to hunt and kill for pleasure. "Jack's in charge of the choir. They can be-- what do you want them to be?" "Hunters." (Golding 23). This shows how Jack was really into being in charge of hunting. He wanted to be the one to hunt and kill. Jack has to much emotion and was unbalanced. With time he went savage on people not like him. Roger was like Jack but showed more evil than anything else. Roger showed evil in a few different ways. When Roger was throwing rocks at the kids. He was starting to show his evil ways by throwing rocks at the kids for no reason. He wouldn't actually hit the kids, but he was trying to scare them. Roger starts to show his evil ways at this point. Towards the end of the book, Roger becomes extremely evil. He knocks a large bolder on Piggy and kills him for no reason. "High overhead, Roger, with a sense of delirious abandonment, leaned all his weight on the lever." (Golding 180). Roger is full of evil in this situation. He kills Piggy with a bolder, and doesn't think anything of it.
