The Rising Costs of Education and the Sacrifices this Entails.
Today as ties between the private sector and universities are strengthened we are left wondering whether this is a benefit for universities or if it is instead undermining the whole basis of the system. Questions arise as to the whether this slow shift to privatization is worth the drawbacks it carries or whether it is essential to evolution of today's universities. Universities were once a place where people from a variety of backgrounds could get quality educations without worry that the discoveries and criticisms they made would possibly affect the funding to their projects. They were also a place where the public and government supported them and funded them, but unfortunately these times are changing and therefore so must the universities.
The reality of the situation is that with growing student enrollment and budget cutbacks universities no longer have a choice but to turn to the private sector for help with the financing of their advancement. While it may not be the most desirable alternative to government funding, but privatization is the only choice that will allow universities to continue to remain running at the level they are currently running at. At the moment our government is either unable to or just unwilling to financially support these institutions at the desired level and therefore they are forcing universities to find alternative means to support themselves. As the battle rages with critics and supporters at each other's throats, universities try to find a balance between academic integrity and the ability to advance themselves. While this battle and the indecision persists we the students are being forced to pick up the slack with rising tuition costs and under-funded programs. .
If universities were to begin to allow the private sector to have a greater role in our education I believe that society, as a whole would be benefited.
