LOW BACK PAIN IN WORKPLACE


            
            
             This study was conducted to determine the prevalence and the risk factors of low back pain (LBP) among textile workers. 378 workers were chosen from different departments in Tanta Spinning and Weaving Company, Gharbia Governorate.
             The prevalence of low back pain was 21.40% among manual workers in this company while it was 9.23% among administrative employees. Most of complained workers were above 40 years of age and the most prominent risk factors for low back pain were age progression, long duration of employment, increased body mass index and smoking habits. Persons practicing sports have lower rates of low back pain than those not practicing sports activities.
             The most commonly detected causes of low back pain among studied workers were spondylosis (30.14%) followed by mechanical causes (e.g. strains, sprains, etc.) (19.18%). Proper selection of workers by pre-employment and pre-placement examination together with health education about body mechanics, proper lifting and carrying, bending, hazard of prolonged standing beside training courses should be emphasized for prevention of low back pain.

             INTRODUCTION.
             Low back pain is second only to the common "cold- as a cause of time lost from work. (1).
             Back pain is not a new problem and it is a major cause of loss of time from work, decreases the capacity of the workers and affect the production of factories.(2).
             It has been suggested that low back pain is more common when subjects are poorly matched to the task because of either lack of physical strength or the worker's self-perception.(3).
             Occupations involving heavy labor have an incidence of low back pain similar to that more sedentary employment, but disability is more common in the former-probably related to the type of work required rather than the symptoms.(4).
             Heavy manual work has been considered a risk factor for back injuries and back trouble in general and it is also true that unskilled and heavy manual workers are more exposed to risk of injury .
