Drug abuse

In addition, three athletes in the 2002 Winter Olympics were tested positive for Nandrolen, a drug that can improves muscle buildings (CBC Canada). Amphetamine, another popular performance enhancer, is more commonly known as speed (Johnson 41). This particular drug is very popular among younger athletes and more specifically, sprinters. Amphetamine will increase the person's heart rate, thereby improving their performance. The development of these new drugs is one of the many effective ways for which scientists help athletes to cheat in sports.
Besides inventing new drugs to beat the tests, scientists have also found other alternative ways to cheat. Traces of drug will remain in the athlete's body for only a limited time, and drug tests can only detect signs of banned substance if it has been taken within a certain time. Seeing the flaws in the testing system, athletes have learned to decrease the potency and dosage of drugs before the competition or drug tests. Athletes can also take large quantities of legal drugs to mask the existent banned substance in their bodies. In extreme cases, some athletes might even inject clean urine into their bladder before the test. Since the bladder continues to produce urine, the substance-free urine sample would easily mix with the athlete's urine (Mohun 10). These are only some of the many alternative ways that allow athletes to take performance enhancers without worrying about the drug tests.
Although more advanced testing methods are continually being developed to deter athletes from cheating, these tests still remain ineffective for anabolic steroids. The chemical composition of anabolic drugs is very similar to human hormones; therefore athletes widely use anabolic drugs to enhance their performance (Johnson 55). Anabolic steroids are used to build-up muscles in the body. There are 120 various kinds of anabolic drugs available on the market.
