Sports and Such: Some Thoughts on Conceptual Art

Sports and Such: Some thoughts on conceptual art.
But don't get me wrong, I still like reading and writing! My favorite sport is soccer, because of Eric Beckam. I also like women's basketball, especially the New York Liberty. I don't so much care for Polo. .
If you don't really like sports, one good thing to do is ask someone who does like sports to explain a particular sport to you. So, for example, I never like baseball at all. But then one time I went to the Stadium with two guys who are totally big baseball fans. And they basically told me to watch for the catcher making signals, they explained about fouls and strikes, and they showed me how to fill out the all star team voting card. This demonstrates how interacting with other people can produce positive and useful knowledge.
One thing you don't want to do is buy a lot of fan outfits for a team before you do any research on them. There's always the chance that they"re a really dumb team and people will think you"re a loser for wearing their logos and stuff. This is an erxample of how society ostracizes people who are different.
Finally, we can think of sports as conceptual art. As Robert Smithson noted, conceptual art "made ideas into fetishes by isolating them from their material surroundings and thereby capitulating to and extending the traditional ideological function of art for the bourgeoisie: it further denied or obscured the role of the art object in the marketplace and hence further divorced art from life." (quoted in Stimpson, 2002) This is clearly also true for sports, and I submit that sports and such are conceptual art.
