Initially these donjons were rectangular in shape but with time they were made round considering the fact that this round shape was easier to defend. During the 13th century the castles became gradually more stylish. Residential and governmental accommodations were moved from the donjons into new constructions which were built within the bailey. Now these donjons made smaller in size and stronger in constructions became the ultimate protective location within a series of battlements. .
All the castles were usually constructed on the periphery of a secure cliff, preferably at a curve in the waterway from where it may well rule a view of the adjoining countryside. An example of a strategically located castle is Chteau Gaillard which was built by Richard I, King of England, in Les Andelys France. The utilization of gunpowder in projectiles put a full stop the impregnability of the middle castles of Europe. After 1500 century the construction of castles was no longer practicable and castles became an expression for an imposing residence.
Medieval castles whether in wreck form or in a renovated form will always rule the diverse landscapes of Europe. Some of the most heavily fortified structures ever created were just made up of simple Stone, mortar, and wood. The very first castles usually depend on there surrounding areas for their protection. Castles were hardly the most contented place to survive but only the nobles and their family were provided with sufficient heat and other services. Middle age castles were just built for protection but not comfort. Casement were little wider than slit in the wall. They were very cold as stone floors and walls hardly kept any heat. Even water had to be fetch by the bucketful all over the castle. Walls were constructed very high to defend from proceeding soldiers, and to make available needed lookout arrangements. .
The main function of these medieval castles of Europe was to be used as a weapon unto itself and its defensive battalion of soldiers exploited all potential advantage.
