Jailed for Freedom

She was compelling and very determined. Perhaps her greatest strength was her ability to listen. Ms. Stevens says that she witnessed the same scene over and over - some upset or even distraught non-believer would bend Alice's ear for an hour or so to explain why women should not have equal rights. Never blinking and never interrupting, Alice would listen and then ask if the person had 30 minutes to listen to her. More likely than not, a new soldier in the suffrage army was enlisted. She often deliberately enraged people and then smiled as they simmered. She saw her role in the movement as one of instigator - one who "kept others shaken up".
Representatives of the movement continued to struggle with President Wilson in an effort to persuade him to support the legal implementation a means of support for the suffrage movement. The suffrage issue was brought as often as possible to his attention from then on until his final surrender. It lay entirely with him as to how long women would be obliged to remind him of this issue before he did something positive to help.
In the fall of 1914 the nay-sayers were out in full force. To say that the election of 1914 was important is to understate the situation completely. Six weeks before the national election the members of the movement awoke to find the issue of women's suffrage thrust into the spotlight. The campaign became very heated and moved rapidly from the suggesting straight way onto demanding. Threats of violence were made against the vocal. Ms. Stephens recounts that she was in Colorado to campaign for acceptance of the amendment. She related how she was told to take her radical ideas back where she came from. Obviously, she didn't follow orders well.
In chapter 3, Ms. Stevens tells the story of a time when Ms. Paul and others in the movement allowed President Wilson to "hang himself" so to speak. Ms. Paul said, "It is the best thing that could happen to us.
