Glory

Trip gets caught sneaking away from camp and is punished with a whipping by Shaw's orders. Shaw learns that Trip was not trying to desert camp but in fact find himself some shoes which the soldiers dearly needed. Well aware of the misconception Shaw refuses to overturn his orders on the grounds that soldiers were not allowed to leave camp under any circumstances. This conflict made me question Colonel Shaw's true beliefs. Trip's shirt was raised revealing his back so badly scarred that it almost brought a tear to my eye. This put an exclamation point on Shaw's decision and it made me wonder how on earth he would ever gain the respect of these men. The turning point comes when payday arrives. The Union is supposedly fighting for equal rights but decides that the black soldiers should be paid less than their white counterparts. This raises a huge outrage throughout the entire regiment starting when Trip decides that he doesn't want his paycheck if he can't get the same pay as a white soldier. The outrage ends when Colonel Shaw decides to refuse his pay for the same reason. It was at this moment that the 54th Regiment became one. With Shaw gaining the respect of Trip, Shaw also gained the respect of all the other black soldiers who looked at Trip as a leader of sorts. This new relationship is strengthened even further when Shaw goes to great measures to outfit his entire unit with new uniforms and shoes that they so desperately needed. I think at this point everybody including myself and any other viewers of this movie are on the Shaw bandwagon. He has proven that he is totally dedicated to fighting for the blacks as well as the entire Union as a whole. Even when the decree was delivered by the Confederates that any union commander of black soldiers captured in combat would be hung, Shaw didn't think twice. .
After the first skirmish in which the 54th Regiment won fairly easily their confidence was very high, but there was something missing.
