They informed the readers of specific examples of legendary officers who had helped to revolutionize the NYPD organization without offering their own point of view. Thomas Byrnes" career as an officer was followed from his early patrolman days up to his retirement. He laid the groundwork for the NYPD detective bureau, which is still in existence today. Teddy Roosevelt, one of our U.S. Presidents is another man who was portrayed in this book. Roosevelt was the police commissioner of the NYPD until April of 1897, he left to become the Assistant Secretary of the Navy.

This book provides insight into the world of New York City policemen. The authors examine specific men's lives throughout the past one hundred and fifty years. These men helped to make the NYPD what it is today. One of the men who helped make this police force legendary was George Walling. Walling joined the force in 1847 with the purpose of buying time for better employment. After a few months, Walling realized that police work suited him well. He was a clean cop who possessed an air of authority with an easy going manner and a humble attitude. He was respected and liked by both his fellow officers and the street thugs. A very quiet and observant man, he soon developed the ability to pick out the misfits in a crowd. This was considered a coveted attribute by many of his fellow officers. Eventually, Walling developed into one of the finest cops ever in the NYPD rising to the rank of Inspector.
