Stockings, written by Tim O"Brien, was a terrific short story. I genuinely loved this story because I can relate to it. I am very superstitious so I to have a good luck charm. The only difference between Henry Dobbins and I is that my good luck charm is a one dollar bill instead of a pair of stockings. Dobbins stockings were special to him because his they belonged to his girlfriend. The stockings to him were a shield that would protect him through a war. It sounded funny and probably looked strange when he wrapped them around his neck, but to him and his war friends it kept them safe. At first it took them a while to believe in the stockings, but when Dobbin went out on the field with only the stockings around his neck and absolutely no other armor, their minds were made up that those pantyhose's truly had power. .
As far as my good luck charm, it is a dollar bill that my grandmother gave to me. She folded it up into a triangle and then gave it to me. I never really wanted to spend it so I keep it in my wallet. Now that she has passed, it has become much more valuable to me. It is also a reminder that she is always by my side. When Henry's girlfriend broke up with him, his war friends felt that his "good luck charm" would no longer give him good luck and they feared that they would no longer be safe. The best thing of this story was when Henry told everyone that his girlfriend may not love him anymore, but that did not matter because he still loved her and therefore her stockings were in fact good luck.
Another touching story, written by Raymond Carver, was called The Third Thing That Killed My Father Off. This story was very moving because it showed us the readers how harsh they treated "Dummy." The writer did a wonderful job in describing what exactly Dummy looked like and how he react to people's questions. The writer also described how Dummy lived, which was just as everyone else in the neighborhood.
