The Young Hero

The organization was born out of the frustrations black students often encountered within multiracial schools, and geared itself at addressing those frustrations of not only students, but blacks in general (Websters Steven). In July 1972, the Black People's Convention (BPC) was founded with Biko's help. Also, through his inspiration, the black high school youth of the country were mobilized through the formation of the South African Students" Movement (SASM), a group that played a pivotal role in the 1976 uprisings in Soweto. Another organization Biko founded was the National Association of Youth Organization (NAYO) which catered to the general population of youths. Biko began to work for the Black Community Programs (BCP) (Kgokong). In 1972, Biko was expelled from Medical School, for his "participation in activities disrupting the peace of things" (Websters Steven). In March 1973, he was banned and restricted to Kingwilliamstown, where he founded a BCP office. Soon, his banning order was amended to prohibit him from associating with the BCP. Biko was now in the apartheid battle full throttle. The next, two years of his life would then be even more monumental in his altruistic fight in the battle that would soon take the young hero's life. .
Donald Woods, a white editor of the London Daily Dispatch described Biko as "one of the main hopes for a peaceful solution to the racial crisis in South Africa," and "the single most important black leader of all" (Burns). After participating in the 1976 Soweto protests, where police ruthlessly killed 600 innocent black students, Biko began to get the majority of his support from the student population. With Biko's involvement in so many civil activities, he was often a target of the "system", (Websters, Apartheid) being "frequently harassed, detained and charged" (Websters, Steven) under South Africa's "notorious security legislation" (Burns).
