Dutch and French Economical and Social Structures

The clothes are not fancy or fashionable and give no impression that they are expensive. Meanwhile, the room itself is not decorated. It seems that the men in the painting had no interest in showing off their wealth by creating a showy, flashy environment. They are probably cautious with money and are worried that spending finances on unnecessary things like decorations would be a waste. The economic values of the Dutch men tell them that living luxuriously is not of much significance. However, unlike the Dutch, the French (nobility) enjoyed spending money and showcasing their wealth. The French held anything luxurious and elaborate in high regard. They generally valued living in royal splendor. The painting shows how true this is. In contrast to the men in the Dutch painting, all of the men in this painting are finely dressed. The French court sharply differs from the dull Dutch court. The French courtroom is extremely colorful and bright. It has large, magnificent windows to let in light whereas the Dutch court does not. And while the room in the Dutch painting has no decorations or ornaments of any sort, the glamorous French room is filled with beautiful statues, antiques, and also a marvelous rug to go with them. It is obvious that the Nobles spent alot of money in upgrading the luxury in which they lived their lives.
The Dutch painting conveys a solemn, serious mood that is associated with the strict Calvinist social structure of the Netherlands while the French painting is lively and exuberant, exemplifying the completely different social structure of France. First of all, the black clothes and the dim lightness of the Dutch courtroom creates a serious atmosphere for the painting. Also, the faces of all the men are serious and focused. Perhaps the men are writing up some kind of law or bill. If that is the case, then it also represents another reflection of the plain Dutch social structure.
