Fulfilling your needs and desires in Nikki Giovanni's "Master Charge Blues-.
In Nikki Giovanni's poem "Master Charge Blues- we are told a story of how a woman misses her mate and uses her master charge to escape the feeling of loneliness. Many of us have been through divorce, break-up or even just being alone. When a person is without someone that fulfills certain emotional and physical needs it can create a multitude of desires. "Desire is necessary "not only for art but for binding people together.""(Jong 95) This poem seems to be dealing with ways to cope with the absence of the one you love. I think that one possible theme for this poem may be that when the one you long for and desire most is not present you need to fulfill those desires in other ways, for instance shopping.
The woman in this poem seems to be a very dependant woman and has a multitude of needs that cannot be fulfilled without her mate. In the first stanza she repeats the same lines over and over " its Wednesday night baby and im all alone-(1-2). This to me means that she is feeling regret and frustration because of her feeling of loneliness. When the writer states these lines over and over she creates a sense of loneliness and desire. .
In the second and third stanza the writer talks about wanting her mate to stay and fulfill her needs and wants, but he or she states that they have to go. This to me says that the woman tried to persuade her mate to stay with her, but was unsuccessful. In the third stanza the writer states, "where your hump usta lay-(16). To me this means that her mate at one time slept in the bed next to her and she looks over at the smooth sheets to see he or she is gone. This again gives me a sense of loneliness and frustration. It also states in the third stanza that, "feminine odor and no reason why- (18). To me this means that the sweet aroma of their nights of passion still exist throughout the threads of her sheets.
