Anything but Average

It is not the rows of trophies and plaques that he has acquired over his lifetime that bring him the most joy; it is in simply being with those that he loves that he feels complete. His most prized possession is his family. Every Sunday he meets his brother for 8:00 A.M mass. They sit and talk for hours; he then comes home and calls his mother and sisters in St. Louis. He is always checking in on them, making sure everything is all right. He believes that in your family you develop the basis of whom you are and who you will become. He time and time again tells his four kids that no one will stand by you like your family, through thick and thin they will always be there. He is truly a family man.
He has the most simplistic philosophy on life. He merely says to live it. He once told me that he has three goals in life, one, to give his children; the best education, two, give his family the best health care possible, and three, above everything, bring happiness to everyone he meets. In happiness, he doesn't mean simply smiling as he goes about his day to day activities; he means helping out anyone he can at anytime with anything. Whenever his kids are sad or mad he always says, "You are the only one who can make yourself happy and you are the only one who can make your self sad. You choose what you want to be."" I've heard these few sentences repeated all my life, at times I wished he would say something other than that phrase, because I never understood the power that was behind his words. I am just now realizing how true the words he speaks are and how much I still have to learn about life.
My dad taught me that giving is always better than receiving; a true cliché, something easy to say, but hard to actually live. Yet, somehow he manages to do it. He never takes more than he needs and always puts others before himself. He gets by with the least of accommodations, but is always thankful for what he has.
