             Advertising, while seeming less effective, has advantages that replace basically all of it's disadvantages. With advertising, you have all of the time in the world. The pressure of creating a sales message and presentation on the spot with the customer watching is totally eliminated. Another advantage is that advertising can be far cheaper per potential customer than personal selling. Advertising deals with hundreds, thousands, or millions of customers at a time, reducing the per cost to mere pennies. Actually advertising costs are determined in part using a formula to determine, not cost per potential customer, but cost per thousand potential customers. Thus, it appears that advertising as a sales tool is a good idea. For small ticket items, such as chewing gum, advertising is cost effective to do the whole selling job. For larger items, such as cars, advertising is used to do a large part of the job while personal selling is used to close the deal.

             Along with the seller or advertiser, there are other contributing factors that make advertising an effective selling technique. These factors mainly have to deal with several components. These components are communication, information, paid for, persuasive, and products, services or ideas. Without these components, some products simply would not sell.
             Communication means not only speech or pictures, but any way one person can pass information, ideas or feelings to one another. This component uses all of the five senses: smell, touch, taste, sound and sight. Sound and sight are the only ones that are really useful. Sound is useful because it can be used in media such as radio and television. It is also useful in creating words that create the "theatre of the mind." Sight is extremely useful because it uses both words and images effectively. .
             Information is defined as knowledge, facts or news. It comes in many forms that can be either complete or incomplete.
