Male and female tigers are solitary animals. Both have their own hunting territories, and both mark territories the same, by spraying urine and scratching trees. The female will not defend her territory, but the male is an aggressive defender. The male will be patient of other tigers passing through, but is more tolerant of females; due to the fact cubs are usually present.
The female is ready to mate for three to seven days every two years. The male will usually find the female by signs of urine deposits and tree scratches (Montgomery 59). But due to the large area, up to four hundred miles, the female may have to go find her mate. Once a mate is found the female will carry the cubs for three to three and a half months. After that a litter of three to four kittens, in a well protected den, is delivered. The kittens are born blind and will open their eyes at about two weeks. The female tiger feeds the cubs until five to six months of age. At this time the cubs are able to go with the mother on hunting trips. Soon there after the cubs are able to hunt for themselves which occurs at about a year old. The cubs continue to stay with their mother until an age of three to five years old. Then will leave to find some own territories and mates. .
A tiger can live up to thirty years but today the average life span of a Siberian tiger is two years due to the illegal killing of them. The population numbers 200 in the wild, and around 250 in zoos around the world. Unless dramatic steps are taking to reestablish the Siberian tiger's population, they will be extinct within ten years.
