             In the nineteenth century, women were repressed and controlled by their husbands and male influences.
             The narrator of the story is repressed and represents the oppression of women in society.
             A house is normally a symbol of a secure place for a woman, but this house is not her own and she does not want to be in it.
             The house does not represent the traditional symbol of security for the domestic activities of a woman.
             The creeping women that she see through the windows, represent women in society that have to creep around to be part of society.
             The bars over the windows represent the division between men and women as women were held back.
             Her husband and her brother are doctors which shows the high ranking of men in society.
             Jane represents a typical woman who is a perfect and enthusiastic housekeeper and has no higher ambition.
             The dominance of the man is shown when she tries to tell her husband how she feels and quickly quieted.
             John and Jane could symbolize traditional society. Strong dominate male and submissive female.
             Pulling the wallpaper down was a symbol of feminism being released from bondage.
             Woman is suffering from post-partum depression.
             Husband/physician has typical male stubbornes and refuses to admit there is something wrong with his wife.
             Same attitude is seen in her brother, also a doctor.
             Husband treats her as a child and threatens to send her to Weir Mitchell in the fall.
             Male dominance is shown by John who prescribe her medicines, diet, sleep and subjects that occupy her mine.
             She becomes dependent oh husbands will and judgment.
             She is treated line and inmate and a child. .
