Nationality that fits

Today's world allows us to move from one country to another very easily. This also gives people the opportunity to learn from other cultures. Those who move during their early stages of life tend to adopt the traditions of their new home country. The author, Isabel Vincent, states that fitting in a new society is possible but would be too hard to practice both culture at the same time. She refers to the masking of her identity, the unsuccessful attempt to go back to her Portuguese traditions, and the fact of being a new born Canadian. .
Isabel tries to fit in the society by hiding her real identity. At first, she went around telling people she was Greek because she thought it would be too hard for kids to name her nationality. It seemed to be easier to pronounce "Italian-Canadian" or "Greek-Canadian" rather than "Portuguese-Canadian". She could not bring herself to protect her identity and resulted in resentment to her nationality. Consequently, Isabel's attempt to satisfy her environment would soon make her forget her true nationality. In parallel, her brother was afraid that teachers and classmates would not be able to pronounce their names, and that's probably why she thought her brother had a point of changing names. As a result she reluctantly follows her brother's footstep by changing her name to also avoid any embarrassment due to mispronunciations. This leads to an acquired distaste and dismissal of their true names. Basically, by changing her name and telling others that she belongs to another nationality hides her true identity and thus enables her to forget her origins and to fit in with her new environment throughout her youth.
Isabel tries to readjust with people from her ethnic background. Most newly arrived immigrants tend to be poor. The lower classes stick together because of their common characteristics. However, considering the fact that she lives on the opposite side of where most Portuguese live made it hard to blend in with her own kind because of the class differences that exist between those communal areas.
