The Drug War: Marijuana and Money


It is believed by many that marijuana use will make you dumb. But evidence shows that this only in the cases of people who greatly abuse it, "Current marijuana use had a negative effect on global IQ score only in subjects who smoked 5 or more joints per week" (Fried). If spread out this would mean a person smokes 5 days a week which is in great excess and they have a serious problem. Once again we can compare this to alcohol as one who drinks 5 nights a week many would consider having a serious problem. Evidence from this same study showed no evidence of a negative effect from people who were once heavy users and have since stopped leading them to the conclusion that there is no long term effect on intelligence. The DEA also claims it has a "High potential for abuse" (Title 21, US Code), but there is no evidence of marijuana being physically addictive, although similar to sex and the internet one can become harmfully mentally dependent on it when abused.              All too often the people who propose to legalize marijuana are not only users but abusers of the substance and are motivated for purely personal reasons. The entire nation will profit off of my plan in many ways. The most substantial benefit of legalizing marijuana will be the money we can save by stopping the massive influx of non-violent drug offenders in our prison system and creating new forms of income for our country. Once made legal the first step in my plan would be to release all the prisoners currently incarcerated for marijuana possession charges in both federal and state penitentiaries. It is a well known fact that our prisons are over crowded and the rate at which they crowding increases every year.
