Your primary form of interaction for the next five years or so will be a single word, "Mooooooooooooommmmmmm and then, somewhere down the line a mutual respect is formed and she becomes your best friend again. The bond that mothers and daughters share is a bond that affects their entire lives. Lessons on life are learned by each individual during the first few days of the daughter's life. The mother is filled with high expectations for the daughter. She hopes that her life will be better than her own. She hopes that she can give her daughter everything she never had. Finally, she hopes that she will be the best mother that she can possibly be. These hopes are met with expectations from the wondering daughter. The daughter looks to the mother for guidance and love. The relationship between a mother and a daughter is full of complex values and feelings this is evident in the novel The Joy Luck Club.
             The Joy Luck Club is a representation of the persistent tensions and powerful bonds between mother and daughter in a Chinese American society and is written by Amy Tan. The book illustrates the hardships both the mother and daughters go through in order to please the other. Also, it shows the troubles the daughters face when growing up in two cultures. In this book, Amy Tan represents the conflicting views and the stories of both sides, providing the reader--and ultimately, the characters--with an understanding of the mentalities of both mother and daughter, and why each one is the way she is. .
             From the beginning of the novel, we hear Suyuan Woo tell the story of "The Joy Luck Club," a group started by some Chinese women during World War II. Jing-Mei explains while remembering the memories of her mother, " 'We feasted, we laughed, we played games, lost and won, we told the best stories.we could hope to be lucky. That hope was our only joy-. The mothers grew up during perilous times in China.
