Hi my name is Tara B and after researching Euthanasia I have come to the conclusion that "EUTHANASIA SHOULD BE LEGALIZED UNDER STRICT CONTROLS" The word Euthanasia, for those of you who don't know originated from the Greeks. "Eu" means "good" and "thanatos" means "death." One definition of Euthanasia is "the intentional termination of life by another at the explicit request by the person who dies." So before you decide whether you are for or against Euthanasia make sure that you really know what it is. Euthanasia implies that the act must be initiated by the person who wishes to commit suicide, however some give euthanasia the meaning that include both voluntary and involuntary termination of life. Because of all the many meanings of Euthanasia, the result is mass confusion. I found that throughout North America, committing suicide is not a legal offense, however, helping another person do it is a criminal act? In Oregon there is an exception that allows terminally ill patients in intractable pain to get a lethal prescription from their physician. This is called PAS or "Physician Assisted Suicide." Many people die horrible deaths. One study showed that more often then not, patients died in pain with their desires concerning treatment neglected, after spending 10 or more days in the intensive care unit. Dr. C.S. Hill stated that "All types of pain in all parts of the world are inadequately treated." I strongly agree with him. I also agree with Dr. Albert Shweitzer who stated "We all must die. But if I can save someone from days of torture, that is what I feel is my great and new privilege. Pain is a more terrible lord of mankind then even death itself." Euthanasia is not for everybody and should only be legal for certain situations. Euthanasia is an issue for the following reasons. People have many different reasons for wanting to commit suicide. Some are severely depressed over a long time.
