J. K. Rowling was born on July 31, 1965 in chipping Sodbury, near Bristol, in southern England. Her name is Joanne Rowling and the K. came form the name Kathleen. Since she was an author of a book her publishers wanted initials for her name instead of just J. Rowling, so she came up with Kathleen who was Rowling's favorite grandmother therefore it gave her the official name of Joanne Kathleen Rowling. A.K.A. J.K. Rowling. Rowling has a younger sister by the name of Dianne Rowling. Both Rowling's came up with nicknames which they preferred to be called by. Joanne Rowling wanted to be called Jo and Dianne Rowling wanted to be called Di.
