The Great Debate on Cloning

They figure that if they pick and choose between genes, maybe it would be possible to take out any genetic disorders and make their kids stronger, smarter, and healthier. .
There are many potential benefits to human cloning, mostly made up of a variety of lifesaving medical treatments. These could include animals that excrete human proteins such as insulin, in their milk, growing tissue cells that could replace pancreatic tissue in diabetics and repair tissue damaged by heart attacks and make bone marrow for leukemia patients (Butler). One of the arguments that go along with medical uses for cloning is that Embryonic Stem Cells could be used to solve these problems, rather than cloning a completely new person and taking them apart, which is the idea that scares many people. EC cells are also part of a large debate, as supporters believe that making cells from human skin to treat diseases is no more ethically wrong than taking a vein from the leg of a patient and using it for a heart bypass (Butler). In both cases, a part of the human is taken and being used for something other than its original purpose. People who do not support EC cell research however, feel that it is no different from cloning an entire human and that diseases happen for a reason and people should accept death may it come. .
Apart from medical advantages, cloning could change the lives of many people who are unable to have their own children. Many infertile couples in the world as well as homosexual couples and older couples are unable to naturally bear their own children and do not feel comfortable adopting. Were cloning available, many supporters believe that these couples would have just as fair a chance to have children that are identical copies of them. There are also couples whose children are dying or have died and they want to bring them back or those who want to have children with tremendous talent such as the basketball skills of Michael Jordan, the voice of Celine Dion, or the intelligence of Bill Gates (Hopkins).
